Afandou’s story began closer to the sea, where coastal settlements were exposed to centuries of pirate raids. To protect their families, residents moved inland and rebuilt between the surrounding hills, hidden from the view of passing ships. That refuge gave the village its name: “áfanto” (άφαντο), the Greek word for “invisible”. Today, the open coastline and the sheltered village still tell the two halves of that story.
